I check my Emails for a sign of any one of my friends being alive, but there is nothing. Nothing recent, nothing new.

Just posts from over two weeks ago.

No one has been texting me either, other than Kylee.

Even at her name, I blush. She’s so kind and optimistic...

...I can’t beat her in any way. And she’s the only one that texts, like, daily.

    My phone rings.

    Speaking of which...

I answer the call and hold the phone up to my ear.

“Hi, Kylee!” I chirp. “How are you?”

“I’m great! Just wanted to know if you wanted to meet up at the café in say, an hour?” Her sunshiny voice asks.

I am almost faint in excitement.

“Of course!” I speak. “I’d be happy to.”

“Alright. Remember, in an hour!” She would say. She hung up.

I realize I’m not dressed at all!

I quickly grab some clothes and shuffle into them and put a headband on over my bird’s nest of hair.

Kylee is sweet and shy to mostly anyone but me. Well, okay, and her current girlfriend.

Diana is kind of...well, bossy. And she gets kind of rude.

Recently she hit someone at school.

I shudder at the thought. Poor kid went home and hasn’t come back for three days.

Kylee says she’s Diana’s support animal.

Diana called Kylee a pet after she said that.

    I hate Diana.

I look at my clock. Why can’t time go faster?

I guess it gives me time to think.

I want to try out for Romeo and Juliet, the play coming up soon.

And I won’t be trying out for Juliet.

That’s right, I’m trying out for Romeo.

    Is that wrong? Weird, even?

Meh, I don’t care. It’s my life. Hopefully, the Theater and Arts Program teachers won’t judge me too harshly.

My thoughts start to wander a bit until it hits me.

I promised a fan fiction today that I haven’t even started!

I put my head in my hands. This is horrible!

I wonder if I’m a terrible author or a terrible friend.

Or a terrible human in general.

    Deep breathes.

I feel like this a ton like I’m worthless.

But my friends have helped me through it.

    And I don’t need anyone’s pity!

Okay, I can start my writing in...

    I look at the clock.

    Oh, great goddess!

How has an hour already passed!

I’ll start my story right when I get back.

I grab my coat, hug my parents, and make a mad dash to the café, trying to beat Kylee.

Despite how perfect she is, she is constantly late.

I suddenly spotted a girl with a yellow hoodie on and the hood over her head and eyes.

    I recognize that hoodie!

    “Kylee!” I shout.

The girl doesn’t even look up, just sits down across from me, and starts crying.

I notice the tears are stained red.

“Kylee?” I ask. I dare get up and sit next to her and take her hood off.

    I can’t believe what I see.

All around Kylee’s right eye is black, and blood trickles from around it.

    I snap.

“Did Diana do this!” I shout.

    Kylee nods and continues crying.

“You need to break up with her!” I yell.

Kylee sniffs. “She said she’d beat up my little siblings-”

“She won’t, because I’m telling her parents, our principal, everyone!” I shout.

Kylee looks nervous. She looks down.

I grab her hand and drag her out of the café and into the alley where we would always hang out.

I looked at her and cleaned her up.

It wasn't that bad of a wound.

She looked at me, still afraid and sad.

So, I pushed her hair back.

    She looked down.

“Alex, I have to go,” she said.

“Kylee, I really like you,” I spoke shakily. “A lot more than a friend.”

“Alex!” She spoke. “I would agree, but...”

“You need time,” I finished. “I get it.”

    “I’m sorry,” she said.

    “I... It’s fine,” I whisper.

I slowly walk back to my house and throw myself onto my bed.

    I give a whimpering sob.

I get online and notice Sarah, Ella, Leona, and Brendon are on.

I decide to talk to them.

    MizzAlex: Sarah, Ella, hey.

    EllaBella: Hey Alex.

    SarahSmith: Hey Alex, hey Ella.

MizzAlex: So, you guys finally decided to get on?

SarahSmith: Remember? I and Sora went to the beach. I just got home.

Ella Bella: And I’ve been at camp.

MizzAlex: Oh. What about Leona and Brendon though?

EllaBella: I’m not friends with Brendon, so I don't know.

MizzAlex: It’s like he died all of the sudden.

    SarahSmith: I guess.

    EllaBella: I gtg guys.

SarahSmith: Me too. Remember, just got home.

    MizzAlex: Oh, bai guts.

    EllaBella: WHAT!

    MizzAlex: *guys

    SarahSmith: Okay, bai.

    EllaBella: Bai.

Well, that crashed and burned. Let’s see what Leona’s up to... I think I’ll video chat with her though.

    MizzAlex: Leona, wanna video chat?

Lemons&Leona: Yea sure. Let me get on.

I sent Leona the invite and she joined my personal video chat.

    “Hey, Alex!” She shouts enthusiastically.

I sniff. “Are you on a plane?” I ask.

“Yeah, I was visiting family,” she says. Then she frowns. “Alex, were you crying?”

Ack! I quickly run into my bathroom and shove my face into a thing of makeup and walk back.

    “Nope!” I say.

“Yeah right, I can tell when something’s wrong,” Leona said. Her short blonde hair was messy. She obviously just woke up.

“Okay, well...” I murmured. “For starters, the love of my life just rejected me!”

“Doubt it,” Leona muttered. “Was it Kylee?”

    “No duh, Einstein,” I snort.

“Hey, it’ll be fine,” Leona said. “Is she happy with Diana?”

“Frick no!” I holler at the top of my lungs. “Diana’s been abusing her!”

That makes Leona stand up. “What the frick!” She shouts.

I notice Leona’s screen changes to the email.

    “Leona, what-” I ask.

Suddenly I got a blast email from four hundred people from our school.

    Right, Leona’s friends know everyone.

    The blast email reads:

Diana is abusing our friends and threatening them! Stop her abuse!

    “Leona!” I holler at her.

“It’s been done,” she says. “Bye, Alex.”

Leona’s face is bitter as she signs off.

One more person to talk to, I guess?

I get a buzzing video chat alert in the middle of talking with Joan.

“Ooh, is it your girlfriend?” He snickers.

    “Shut up, Joan,” I murmur.

He nods. “Sure, whatever. Talk to you later, Brendon.”

“Bye Joan,” I say and sign off.

I answer the annoying buzzing noise.

“What's up, Alexander Hamilton?” I ask.

That’s my nickname for her, since her name is Alexander, and she loves that musical.

“Not much...” Alex responded with a sad sigh.

“I saw the blast text,” I say. “Is Kylee alright?”

“Yeah, just a little sore...” She murmured.

“Are you alright?” I ask. She looks a little shaken up.

“Heartbroken,” She responds with a shaky tone.

I am shocked. Alex? Heartbroken? Not a chance.

I mean, a lot of people enjoy her company, even though she is a little over-the-top.

And she doesn’t think much of herself...

But still, heartbroken? Unless it was a guy that was gay and didn’t like her, how could she be heartbroken?

I sigh. “Who did this to you?”

“Don’t try to fix my problems, Brendon,” she said in a dark tone. “I can take care of myself.”

I snicker. “Really? You look pretty devastated.”

“We’re high schoolers now, fool,” She snaps back. “I don’t need your help.”

“That’s not true and you know it,” I say coolly.

She glares me in the eye. I swear, even though we’re separated by a screen it hurts my eyes.

“Remember the bake sale, when you said you could handle it?” She replies lowly. “I tried to help, but you said what I just did. So, a guy can take better care of himself than a girl, right?”

    I realize how it sounded.

    Jerk! I scold myself.

“No, you can-” I start, but she cuts me off.

“And remember when I fell down the hill and got stuck in the gorge?” She growls. “You went to get help, but I pulled myself out, even with a twisted ankle.”

“Yeah, but that was physical-” I begin, yet again, she cuts me off.

“And remember how Derek kissed my ex, Dawn?” She says again. “When he was dating me? Yeah, I just shrugged it off after a few days.”

I frown. “But still-” I start.

“And every day I deal with at least a little anxiety and paranoia!” She shouts. “And I still get things done.”

I sigh. She made good points. She had a good attitude and wasn’t as physically challenged as she thought of herself to be...

“Just leave me alone,” She would murmur. “I thought this would make it better. It only made it worse.”

I’m sitting in my room, my heart and face aching.

I stare at my phone buzzing with a call from Diana.

I sigh and answer the phone.

“WHY DIDN’T YOU ANSWER ME, MORON!” She screamed angrily.

“I’m sorry-” I whimpered. But I stopped myself. “Diana, I’m done with your crap!”

“Huh-?” Diana said, obviously shocked I had even responded.

“You beat me and mistreat me and beat me and hurt me and abuse me!” I scream. “Just because I was quiet you decided to use me!”

    “That’s-” Diana said, speechless.

“You are rude and horrible!” I cry. “I’m done with you! I don’t want to be your girlfriend anymore!”

Diana gave a snarl. “I guess now is the time to tell you I was moving to Alabama,” She said.

“All the better!” I shout. “I don’t want to see you ever again!”

“Whatever,” Diana murmured and hung up.

    I... I did it.

I flopped on my bed and started singing. “We were both young when I first saw you, I closed my eyes, and the flashback started,” I sing. “I’m standing there on a balcony in the summer air.”

I realize it's true. I first saw Alex in fourth grade, and I met Diana when I and Addi were chilling on my porch during the first week of summer.

“See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns,” I continue. “See you make your way through the crowd and say ‘hello’, little did I know.”

I hear someone faintly singing, “That you were my Romeo, you were throwing pebbles, And my daddy said, ‘stay away from Juliet’. And I was crying on the staircase, please don’t go.”

I open my window and I see Alex sitting on a bench outside.

I give the faintest hum of the next notes, “And I said.”

Suddenly I see someone walk out. It’s hard to see, but... I think it’s Amber. She sits next to Alex.

Amber is one of Alex’s friends.

Amber puts her arms around Alex’s neck and embraces her in a hug.

“Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone, I’ll be waiting for all there’s left to do is run!” Amber sings softly.

“You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess,” I whisper.

“IT’S A LOVE STORY BABY JUST SAY YES!” She cries into the night.

“Everything will be fine,” I could hear Amber say.

I close the window and start crying.

    I felt horrible.

    But I wasn’t ready.

    “I’m sorry...” I whisper
