It's 1977
She walks on
Takes her seat
All the kids look at her
Watch her
She gulps, shivers, trembling
Clutches her backpack
Sweat runs a line down her back
Hiding in her jacket
-a small pride flag
The others come on
The popular girls
The ones whose parents are anti-gay
They look around for seats
She avoids eye contact
Confidence trembles
Small roots are ripped up easily
The popular girls can't all find seats
They go to the driver
Who turns
"You'll have to walk home,"
he snarls. "Sorry."
FURY
All she knows is fury
They wouldn't do this if she wasn't gay
Sarah the lead girl looms over her
Calls her names
Jeers
She stands up
She feels tall
She feels proud
She says No
"No what?"
"No you can't have my seat."
*she grows up and is an activist*
