Mike is right if your rifle chambered in 5.56 you can shoot both the 5.56 is more powerful so the casing expands more in the chamber making extraction the problem plus over time rifle may fail due to the over pressure thechamber

Depending on what the rifle is chambered for from the factory is very important. For example, if your AR is chambered for .223 you can't shoot a 5.56 because the dimensions of those two cartridges vary. But if your AR is chambered in 5.56 you can shoot .223 because it is smaller.

The 5.56 is the military version of the 223 but the rifle can shoot them both
