Had Riverdale's creators followed their original plan, the popular CW series would have been one and done - neatly condensed into a 100-minute time-travel movie. Fortunately, it didn't go that way. Every week, we get a new treat from Archie, Betty, Jughead, Veronica and company. That Riverdale is darker than the '40s-era Archie comics it's based on is probably why the characters and story still attract fans almost 80 years later.
You can't go eight decades without culture and people changing dramatically. So, Riverdale's characters have obviously been modernized. For instance, the character Kevin Keller, the main quartet's openly gay friend and son of Riverdale's sheriff, would never have existed in the more homophobic, closeted 1940s. But the main characters have kept their inimitable likability, even as they've gained dimension.
So, you love Riverdale...maybe because you can relate to one of its characters.
