In the South, most people lived on beautiful plantations in the lap of luxury.

Typically planter's wife was in charge of running the household. This included supervising slaves and raising children.

Free African Americans were typically well-treated in the South.

Some slaves were able to save enough money to buy their freedom.

Slave auctions were cruel, but at least families were always kept together.

One way slaves resisted being completely controlled by their owners was by maintaining their own religious beliefs.

Slave codes were created to protect slaves from harsh treatment.
