In 2013, when asked to explain Dragonball's runaway success, creator Akira Toriyama confessed, "Frankly, I don't quite understand why it happened. While the manga was being serialized, the only thing I wanted as I kept drawing was to make Japanese boys happy."
You COULD say he slayed that goal: Since 1984, Dragonball's 42 volumes, which Toriyama admits weren't always meticulously planned or produced, have gone on to sell 159 million-plus copies in Japan. But to his amazement and fans' elation, the modest manga gained fame and went full-on. Worldwide, Dragonball has sold 350 million-plus copies, making it the second best-selling series in history. Its beloved art, characterization and humor are still captivating readers, decades on.
