Note to Matthew - Yes, Lloyd Grant did the solo on the first recording of Hit the Lights, but he was never seen as a member of the band. The story is that James and Lars just drove round to Lloyd Grant's house with their tape recorder and got him to do the solo there and then. He never played with the band or otherwise practiced with them, so was just a 'hired' hand on that one track. He never jammed or played live with them so doensn't count as a true member in the same way that Ron McGovney or Bob Twock was. Also, James Marshall (roadie) played guitar for James when he broke his arm, and doesn't come under the umbrella of people who played in Metallica.
