How advanced of a hiker are you?

You should tell one or more people where you are going hiking

Outside of a city, you don't need to take water with you if you're going on a short hike.

A compass points what direction you should hike

If it's cold, you should dress with lots of layers instead of a big warm coat

If you don't have hiking shoes or boots, you should go buy some right before you go on your hike

You should carry at least two light sources if hiking in the dark or close to sunset

You only need a map on your phone if hiking in the wilderness, anything else is unnecessary

If you aren't hiking with one or more other people, you should have a way to call for help besides a cell phone.
